Few things are more intimidating than a blank page. Here are five strong starts to get you going on this week’s writing—plus a bonus interactive prompt at the end.

Dialogue Start

“I don’t know who told you this was a good idea, but…”

Prose Start

Water washes in across her feet, waves sinking into the sand she stands upon. As shells and stones peek out from the shore, she takes one step forward. Then another. The horizon stares back at her and there is no going back now.

Expand a Concept

Write a farewell to something or someone your characters used to love.

Write a Relationship

Two characters are fighting over the last scrap of food. Who wins? Why?

Mechanical Challenge

Write a 200-word exchange between three characters using only three dialogue tags throughout.
